| Information about the Museum |
| The "Up-in-Smoke" Cigar Band Museum has been on-line since 1995, with a major renovation and expansion in April 2000. There are nearly 800 different vintage cigar bands currently displayed in the Museum, selected from my own collection. The cigar bands are displayed in exhibits contained in 12 different galleries arranged by general subject. Links to the Museum Main Index and to all of the Museum Galleries are provided at the bottom of each exhibit page and each gallery's index page. |
| "est modus im rebus" |
|
The Latin phrase above is attributed to the Roman poet and satirist Horace (65 B.C. - 3 B.C.) and translates as "there is moderation in all things". In that spirit, the content of the museum is presented in a simple format - no frames, no Java script, no ActiveX, no animation. The Museum is a non-commercial website.
The Museum is designed so that it does not require a high-bandwidth internet connection or sophisticated browser to be viewed. It should display properly on browser versions as early as Netscape 2.0+. The Museum is designed to be viewed at 800x600 screen resolution. The only other significant requirement relates to monitor settings. Because most of the images in the Museum are presented in JPEG format, set your monitor for at least 16-bit color display. The antique cigar bands displayed in the Museum were digitally scanned on a flatbed scanner. The cigar band images and other graphics used throughout the Museum were composed and edited using PaintShopPro 6.0 The HTML for the text content of the museum was created using a simple word processing program, and my own limited knowledge of HTML. If you encounter broken links, or if pages appear to be incorrectly formatted and display badly, it is no doubt due to my error. Please report any problems via the e-mail link below. Biographical information on the famous persons depicted on the cigar bands displayed in Gallery 1 was compiled from a biographical dictionary and from information available on the Internet. The information contained in the articles in the Reference Room was compiled from a variety of sources, including magazines, books, cigar band collectors, and on-line sources. Suggestions, error reports, comments, and inquiries by e-mail are welcome, but please be patient for responses. |
